The Castro

The Castro District is the city's historic gay neighborhood and an area synonymous with the civil rights movement for gays, lesbians and transgender people. Metropolitan Community Church San Francisco, at 150 Eureka St., is one of Castro's landmarks. The church lends out faith for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in San Francisco. The area is still home to many community organizations.

While you are there, go and watch a movie at the Castro Theater on Castro Street and enjoy their state-of-the-art audio-video equipment.  The Castro Theater was designed in 1922 by Timothy Pflueger and is one of the great American movie palaces. Look for a local flavor at Starbucks on 18th Street.  If you are a cheese or coffee lover, buy some really nice coffee and cheese at the Castro Cheesery at 427 Castro Street or at Spike's Coffee & Tea located at 4117 19th Street.

To cure your hunger, enjoy juicy burgers with onion rings and French fries at the 24/7 Sliders on 449 Castro. On the finer side, dine at 2223 Restaurant and Bar, and try some of their superb cocktails.

If you are in San Francisco in October, look up the Castro Street Fair which is an enjoyable annual music event. It is the longest running music event in Castro. If you want to see some really big wigs and shocking frocks, be there for Halloween.
