Marina in the morning

After the 1906 earth quake the Marina District was completely destroyed but has been reconstructed since then. It was built on a lagoon and marshland that were filled for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exhibition and include the Palace of Fine Arts and a large grassland. The Palace of Arts building houses the Exploratorium and has a Greco-Roman building with caryatids holding up pillars.

Most people living in San Francisco head for the Marina Disctrict. Many enjoy working around the area and as well as the beautiful vistas.

If you like shopping, you can enjoy spending time away at Union Square. Visit the Goldleaf Chocolatier at 2250 Union Street, and marvel at the familiarly shaped creations. You can buy chocolate cable cars, chocolate Golden Gate Bridge, Olympic medals, Oscar Awards, cell phones and more.

Later, stroll on Chestnut which retains a local flavor with a profusion of shops, grocers and services, and remains a favorite of the district's residents. When you get tired of all the walking, get off your feet at Fuzio (415-673-8804) located on Chestnut, and try their sumptuous entrees. Later, go over to MatrixFillmore, founded by Marty Balin of Jefferson Airplane. This club is reputed as one of the most influential clubs in the city where every night is a DJ night.

The area also offers a wide choice of hotels. The Argonaut Hotel at Fisherman's Wharf a pricey and lavish accommodation that carries the Marina feel all the way into the lobby and guest rooms. Their in-house restaurant serves mouthwatering sea food entrees. If you are looking for an affordable location, choose to stay at Heritage Marina Hotel, situated just a block away from Union Square.
