Russian Hill

Russian Hill is named after the Russian graves that were discovered by gold diggers on top of the hill. You can find clusters of small shops and restaurants on Hyde Street between Jackson and Union Square.

Stroll on Polk Street and browse through creative boutiques and antique shops. See the flower-lined Lombard Street that offers a great photo opportunity. While in the area, go and see the Focus Gallery at 2423 Polk Street. You can rent their dark room by the hour and wash your own prints. When you get hungry, enjoy some mouthwatering burgers at Rex Café (2323 Polk Street).

If you like attic treasures, go and explore Swallowtail (415-567-1555). If you or someone you know likes folk jewelry, there are some really nice pieces available at Russian Hill Antiques at 220 Polk Street.

Enjoy the outdoors at the Alice Marble Park, located on the corner of Greenwich and Larkin Streets, or climb the zig-zaggy steps at the Vallejo Ramps and get right on top for some fabulous views of Alcatraz Island.

San Francisco Art Institute, at 800 Chestnut St., (415-771-7020), is a Spanish structure built in the 1920s, with a mural by Diego Rivera. Sit in some lectures, see some exhibits and learn more about art at this very productive institute.
