Fourty-nine Geary Street used to be a former Western Union headquarters and now houses 20 galleries showing everything from the contemporary art to digital photography.
First visit the Fraenkel Gallery (http://www.fraenkelgallery.com) where you'll find exhibits of the leading names in 19th- and 20th-century photography, curated in thought-provoking shows. Go up a floor to the Haines Gallery (http://www.hainesgallery.com) which focuses on conceptual art. If you wish to see some challenging art on sex, race and politics the second floor houses the Catharine Clark Gallery (http://www.cclarkgallery.com). If you like hunting for rare books, make sure to visit the second floor.
