San Francisco's Museum of Craft and Design is housed in a building which previously served as home to Elizabeth Arden's Red Door Salon. The museum's objective is to celebrate and promote the art of contemporary craft and design by hosting innovative exhibitions, and creating a vital program of education and community outreach.
The museum showcases both the creative process and the products of design. Past exhibits have been devoted to textile design, furniture and toys created by well-known artists, and the accumulated works of specific designers. The museum shop carries many goods in a variety of media. The museum offers free docent led tours.
Later, if you are still in a mood of exploration, visit Chinatown, the Cable Cars Museum and the Cartoon Art Museum — all located within a mile.
If you get hungry, just walk down to Farallon (415-956-6969), which specializes in coastal cuisine. Try their seafood pyramid which piles together shrimp, scallops, lobster, julienne leeks and salmon caviar in the most luscious way.
If you wish to stay nearby, try Hotel Rex. It has a romantic ambiance and is just a short ride away from touristy Fisherman's Wharf.
