Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island is one of San Francisco's most popular destinations, offering a close-up look at a notable and infamous federal Alcatraz prison. This fascinating island attracts more than one million visitors each year. The fortress and prison has been the subject of films and documentaries that reminisce into its intriguing past.

Named after the birds that inhabited the island -- pelicans, or alcatraces in Spanish, Alcatraz Island is nicknamed as the Rock, Hellcatraz and Devil's Island. The prison built in 1850 by military prisoners, has been home to people like Al "Scarface" Capone and Robert "Birdman" Stroud.

Go to Pier 41, to book your seat on a ferry that leaves from departure docks located at the same Pier. Experience how Alcatraz Island draws you into its sphere of imagination. Whether you visit by daylight or twilight, Alcatraz is a world unto itself.

Tours of the island focus on the prison, including cell blocks, the cafeteria and the prison yard. If you have a desire to meet ghosts, visit cell block D, which is said to be haunted. While you are there, see the Alcatraz Lighthouse, the first light house on the pacific coast.

After a tiring day when you get hungry, try the nearby Julius Castle or Mamas on Washington Square. Julius Castle has a historic structure and is a dinner favorite for many. You can find nightlife at Bimbos 365 Club. The music scene is really cool here, with nice pop and jazz to liven up the mood.

If you wish to stay in the neighborhood, try the Best Western Tuscan Inn Fisherman's Wharf -- a longtime favorite of Hollywood producers and actors.
