Built in 1886, this cheerful castle is the only intact Queen Anne-style Victorian private home used as a museum. If you like antiques, you are sure to like this place with all the authentic artifacts on display.
Docent led tours, done every 20 to 30 minutes, are quite informative and take around an hour. Notice the wooden gables, the circular corner tower and the lush ornamentation. See architectural frills of the Victorian era in the windows, trims and turret. If in need of assistance, look for a person with a red jacket.
You will find each room fully furnished with antique Victorian pieces. Go to the supper room and discover the entire history of the home and family that lived here until 1972. Notice the polychrome paint job which is a new invention. Somehow, all San Francisco Victorians have the same paint job. Of all the Victorian houses in the city, Haas-Lilienthal House is considered somewhat the gaudiest and maintained by the Foundation for San Francisco's Architectural Heritage.
If you like the neighborhood, the nearest hotels are the Castle Inn and Nob Hill Motor Inn, from where you can just walk down to Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, the Cable Cars Museum and a number of fine restaurants and shops.
