Amazingly, this building survived the 1906 earthquake, which destroyed much of the surrounding area, including the church next door. Right outside the Mission Dolores building is a diorama created for the 1939 World's Fair. You can see what the Mission District looked like in 1791.
See The Basilica (1918) that features stained glass windows depicting Saint Francis of Assisi, patron of both the Mission and the City of San Francisco. Check out the wood carving of Mater Dolorosa and Our Lady of Sorrows, set high above the main altar.
While you are there, don't forget to visit the colonial-era cemetery to the left of the Mission containing the tombstones of Spanish, Mexican, American and other settlers. The cemetery is also famous as the setting for the graveyard scenes in Alfred Hitchcock's film Vertigo (1958).
The nearest restaurant to Mission Dolores is a Korean place named Sorobol (415 896 5959). Enjoy the garlicky and chili-spiked Korean food at this cozy spot. Later, go to 42 Degrees where you can try imported wine, artisan cheese plates, dine alfresco and also enjoy live jazz.
Located nearby is the Best Western Carriage Inn, which offers a charming atmosphere.
