Florence Gould Theater at the Palace of Legion of Honor

If you feel like enjoying the sound of string chamber music, visit the Florence Gould Theater. The theater opened at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in 1924. This building was designed in Louis XVI style by George Applegarth, the architect of the museum. Previously named the Little Theater, the building went under extensive renovation in 1987, with funds and grant from the Florence J. Gould Foundation. The theater offers an intimate and comfortable setting to enjoy classical opera.

The Florence Gould Theater is reputed as the premier small venue in San Francisco for chamber music. It has hosted performances in the past by famous musicians such as the Budapest String Quartet, the Juilliard String Quartet, the Borodin Quartet, Walter Trampler, Philippe Entremont and the young Yo-Yo Ma.

While you are there see the sophisticated mural, The Apotheosis of the California Soldier, painted by Spanish artist Julio Villa y Prades.

From the Legion of Honor, you may want to go to Ton Kiang (415) 387-8273, home to delicious and popular salt-baked chicken, various meats and seafood stewed in clay pots. Or try sitting out on the patio at Garden House Café (415) 668-1640 with some coffee and deli sandwiches.

If you enjoy old world charm, the Stanyan Park Hotel is a Victorian style hotel located in the neighborhood that can make you feel at home.
