Originally designed as the Veterans Auditorium, this San Francisco theater was renovated and renamed Herbst Theatre in 1977. The United Nations Charter was signed on June 26, 1945, at the Herbst Theatre, making it a historic landmark. The theater, located in the center of the War Memorial Veterans Building, presents a wide range of artistic, cultural and entertainment programming.
You can get in the theater through a stately foyer off of the Veterans Building main lobby. Once inside you will see eight large, beautifully colored Beaux-Arts murals created by Frank Brangwyn for the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition and five chandeliers hanging from a luxurious blue and gold-leaf ceiling. At the Exposition, the murals were displayed in the four corners of the arcades within the Court of Abundance. The paintings symbolize elements of earth, air, fire and water.
The Herbst Theatre provides a nice environment for classical music performances, recitals, dramatic presentations, dance, lectures, films and other activities.
