Palace of Fine Arts Theatre

This beautiful structure, which is done in classical architectural style, dates back to 1915. The Palace of Fine Arts Theatre was build for the Panama-Pacific Exposition in 1915 and it is the only surviving building that made it until today. It was originally made out of stucco, but was recast in concrete in the 1960s. The original columns and rotunda were framed in wood, and covered with a mixture of plaster and burlap-type fiber. It was the largest building ever to be made of that material.

On July 20, 1964, a contract was awarded and the reconstruction began. Workers carefully removed original design elements from which molds were made. The gallery area houses the Palace and the Exploratorium. The theater, which seats 1,000 in a continental-style configuration, was added in 1970.

At the theater, watch a comedy show or see the Moscow Cats performing astounding acrobatic feats. You may have seen these cats on Good Morning America, CBS Early Show and Live with Regis and Kelly.

The Palace is also used for wedding receptions and is a very popular wedding spot through out the San Francisco Bay area. If you like the neighborhood, stay at La Luna Inn comfortably located nearby.
